Feminine Sexuality
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (March, 1985)
Authors: Juliet Mitchell, Jacques Lacan, and Juliet Mithell
Average review score:

Excellent introduction texts
The introduction articles for this book are worth the price of the book; they are clear, intelligent, and balanced. Other contributing writers vary from clear and didactic to veritable models of French obscuritanism, but for the reader interested in Lacanian theory and the debate about feminine sexuality, this book is well worth reading. Some of the points made in the introduction are key.

(M)other may I?
Ah, Lacan...While the postmodern generation, driven to digital scriptololia and hiding beneath their cyber-covers dreaming of Hale-Bopp, continues to feed the yet burgeoning X-philes kitsch and cannabis industry, Lacan stands ready, armed with a bastion of certitude decked out in quagmire of tangled, crabbed, needling, Gallic, galling prose: beneath it all, the phallus, the objet a, the name-of-the-father, the Other of the Other, and jouissance, it all goes back to mom. Oh, the laughter--that none may deny--EVERYBODY's parents @*&#-ed them up

Discovering a Fascinating Modern Odyssey
Fishing Passion
by
James C. Chapralis

As a university administrator of long standing, I read hundreds of pages of articles, reports, and memoranda weekly, and, sometimes, even daily. I am also an avid novel reader and devour much non-fiction. In other words, reading is the linchpin of much of my work and leisure; therefore, I am always on the alert for the next "great read."
Not being either a fisherman or an angler, but always eager to stretch my knowledge base, I was intrigued by the title of a new book, Fishing Passion, and its tag, "a lifelong love affair with angling." Happily, my curiosity led me to read Mr. Chapralis' marvelous odyssey about his incredible life...one imbued with his love and virtuosity of fishing/angling, his daring immersion in several unique business ventures, and his genius for forging remarkable and enduring friendships, including some with the rich and famous.
This incredible Promethean journey, begun and centered in Chicago but encompassing every corner of the globe, is recounted by Mr. Chapralis in an engaging, humorous, and self-effacing style that is the hallmark of every accomplished raconteur. I found myself racing ahead to see what new, exciting, hilarious, and even life-threatening, adventure he would next expose to this delighted, and by now captive, reading audience. And he never disappoints--his is a career highlighted by a life-informing zest and decades of improbable encounters and feats that will not only fire your imagination but also blow your envy quotient through the roof.
We should all be so lucky if a passion of ours could feed our soul, earn our bread, and burnish our existence with the joy, grace, and success that Mr. Chapralis has attained and conveys so effortlessly and convincingly in Fishing Passion. Am I ever glad that my restless inquisitiveness strongarmed me to read Fishing Passion...and so will you!

Vividly communicates the true joy of a beloved pastime
Fishing Passion: A Lifelong Love Affair With Angling by international fishing pioneer Jim C. Chapralis is a unique exploration that explores not so much the "how-to" of fishing, as the emotional aspects of angling. Comparing the attraction and act of fishing to the condition and experience romantic love, as well as deftly capturing the passions of the sport in anecdotes, dreams, memorable personal experiences and communions with nature, Fishing Passion was written by an angler, for anglers everywhere, as it vividly communicates the true joy of a beloved and life-long pastime.

Gem Trails of Southern California

useful book, but needs an update
We just spent the last weekend in the Mojave Desert with this book. We found several wonderful sites using the guide. We also got lost on webs of dirt roads, no matter how closely we followed the book's instructions. I have to think that a lot of the roads have changed, or that some of the directions are not accurate. We also encounted two sites in a row that were closed, but not labeled as such in the book. So although the book is great, it obviously needs an update, even though it was only published in 1999. My boyfriend thought it would also have helped us to have GPS coordinates of the sites. Still, we would never have found the great spots we did without this book, so I would definitely recommend it...

Complete and accurate guide to Southern California Gem Trail
This book gives you accurate maps and information about the many sites to find gems, geode beds, old gold, chalcedony, opal and agate mines in the area, and many other sites and places of interest. It is easy to read and follow and I would recommend it to anyone interested in investigating these types of places in Southern California.

Getting Your Book Published
Published in Paperback by Sage Publications (October, 1993)

A "Must have" for academic writers
The authors are experienced editors in the academic book publishing business. They have a wealth of experience, and that experience shows in the very detailed and practical advice they give. The aim of this book is to maximize the success of academics who wish to begin a book-length writing project. This book includes all the basics. This is an essential for the bookshelf of the academic writer.

Extremely Enlightening, Encouraging, and Easy to Read
This book would be helpful not just to academicians but to any new writers who are targeting specific professional groups--those who are providing helpful insights in a field, and who are not trying to write the "novel of the century." In addition to providing direction for getting your book published, the authors have clearly and concisely explained, in an easy-to-read style, what is required of an author during the publishing process--that phase between acceptance of a manuscript and delivery of the book to its readers. They have outlined the stages of production, and identified the different people at a publishing house with whom an author must interact at those various stages. They emphasize that an author's work is not done when the contract is signed--there is still much to do. I found it very helpful to know about these requirements, especially in anticipating my workload and planning my time.

I would like to see a second edition in which information that is available about publishers on the Internet is addressed. Information about publishers has become much more readily available since this book was released in 1993, but should it be relied upon or are there better options for contacting publishers?

The Ghen and Rains Physicians Guide to Pharmaceutical Compounding

physicians guide to pharmaceutical compounding
A must for pharmasists and physicians concerned with compounding drugs for more personalized care. This book brings to light some of the alternative medicines along with the conventional. Dr. Ghen's approach to medicine brings back the belief that you must treat not only the problem but the individual.

Review by a Medical Doctor
Reference guide for the physician Steven J. Bock, MD

The last quarter of the 20th century witnessed the emergence of integrative medicine. Previously, healthcare practitioners faced increasing pressure to make cookbook diagnostic and treatment protocols to facilitate coding and reimbursement. This led to an attempt to fit the patient's "dis-ease" into the treatment, instead of fitting the treatment to the patient. In contrast, integrative medicine evaluates each individual's symptoms, what they mean, in whom they are occurring, and what that patient needs. Pharmaceutical compounding has endured the same restraints and is now enjoying a rebirth. A compounding pharmacy can expertly mix and dispense various medications and natural supplements in a unique prescription for a patient's unique problem. Editors Mitchell Ghen, D.O., Ph.D., and John Rains, compounding pharmacist, F.A.C.A., have pulled together a significant reference guide on pharmacologic compounding: The Ghen and Rains Physicians' Guide to Pharmaceutical Compounding. (Green Bay: IMPAKT Communications, Inc., 2000). Standard medications will probably work for 80 percent of your patients. However, the other 20 percent may need something special. For example, a menopausal woman may have multiple concerns. Perhaps she experiences certain symptomatology, including a personal or family history of cancer, gastrointestinal problems from oral medication, side effects secondary to allergy, and a unique liver metabolic detox profile for the breakdown of hormones. Her physician may be cognizant of these needs but hampered by the pharmacologic preparations available. Her physician may want to get measurements of the patient's hormones, possibly by blood or salivary determination, and then prescribe a transdermal hormonal preparation, a custom-tailored combination of estriol, estradiol, natural progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA. A qualified compounding pharmacy can specifically design a unique formula for that patient. The Ghen and Rains Physicians' Guide to Pharmaceutical Compounding provides an excellent overview of the myriad aspects involved in compounding a prescription. Mr. Rains gives us a detailed description of the equipment and processes that compounding pharmacies use to implement a formula. The authors discuss the various vehicles and dispersion solutions that are available, and their advantages. You'll learn about the many ways that analgesics can be dispersed, such as rectally or transdermally. Chapters are included on bio-identical hormones, anti-aging nutraceuticals, and homeopathic compounding. The chapter on homeopathic prescribing offers a clear, concise description of homeopathy for the uninitiated physician. There are also sections on bioavailability of various medications, and information on preservatives, stabilizers, flavorings, and coloring agents. I especially enjoyed the chapters on analgesics, nutritional formulations, and rehabilitation/sports medicine, where the authors share sample prescriptions. This will give practitioners a strong starting point so they may eventually create their own unique prescriptions based on their patients' needs. The Ghen and Rains Guide includes professional monographs for over 200 compounding prescriptions for a multitude of conditions. These formulas range from bromelain PLO gel for treating painful inflammation, to testosterone PLO gel preparations. One can also compound DMPS or DMSA, preservative-free medications such as clonidine solution, or preservative-free nutrients such as taurine injectables. Again, this section provides a well-tested armamentarium for established protocols, as well as a starting point from which to create new avenues for your treatments. This is an indispensable office manual for medical practitioners who want to explore the potential of compound prescription writing. In this new millennium, we are becoming more aware of the unlimited amount of medical information and possibilities available to us. We need to make the treatment fit the patient, rather than trying to make the patient fit the treatment. The top-down style of pharmaceutical treatments may work for many of our patients, but we also need the option of customized, individualized products, such as compounded prescriptions. The Ghen and Rains Guide is the first textbook in this field that typifies a shift in the healthcare system. It puts the patient first with respect to prescription remedies. I recommend it highly, and feel it will be very helpful to many primary care physicians, OB-GYN specialists, orthopedists, rehabilitation practitioners, pain-management specialists, and other physicians who choose to expand their repertoire.

Give It Up: Stop Smoking for Life (Paperback & Audio CD set)
Published in Paperback by Alyeska Press (June, 2002)
Authors: Anne Mitchel, Daniel James Hudson, and Anne Mitchell
Average review score:

Reasons to stop smoking and encouragement
"Give It Up" is basically a collection of arguments for why someone should quit smoking. It starts with why a person smokes, then follows with how it hurts the smoker, the benefits of quitting and then finishes with stories from people who have quit. While this may be beneficial to some people it ignores the fact that for most people the reason they have a hard time quitting smoking is because it is an addiction. Many, many smokers would quit today if they were able to and all the ones I know already know the dangers of smoking and the health benefits of quitting, but that has not helped them to quit. There may be some smokers that benefit from a detailed discourse on how bad smoking is for you and how much better you are if you quit. Still others may benefit by using it as an aid to keep them motivated. If they are on a nicotine patch program, hypnosis program, or some other program then reading this may help to keep their motivation level high and increase their success. However, the greatest benefit of this book may be as a preventative with teenagers to make sure that they realize just how bad smoking can be.

really helped me quit!
When Anne spoke about my higher power wanting me to be a nonsmoker, that is what got to me the most. I know this intuitively and it resonated within me to hear it verbalized in such a way.

Granite and Rainbow
Published in Paperback by Cooper Square Press (May, 2000)
Author: Mitchell Leaska
Average review score:

A fascinating book mirrors a fascinating life
For anyone who is familiar with the life of Virginia Woolf, this book will offer few surprises. What it does offer, however, is an continously interesting slant on the life of one of the most talented, yet troubled women of the Twentieth Century.

Through Leaska's comprehensive biography, we learn the intimate details of her family life. Especially interesting in the first few chapters is the meticulous dissection of Virginia's mother, who served as the perpetual victim forever pining for her first husband. She revelled in her feminity and equated this with servitude toward those who were suffering or in distress.

Woolf is indeed a fascinating subject of study and Leaska's biography definitely does her complicated persona justice.

If this is your first foray in the world of Virginia Woolf, it would be beneficial to read some of her works including "To the Lighthouse" and "A Room of One's Own" first as these are often quoted and will only serv! e to complement this rich biography.

Beyond the old ways of biographical indexing
This has to be the best biographical study of Virginia Woolf. It is in a new style of creative biography rather than the old forms of didactic dissertation that should be only part of Library indexing and not of biographical scholarship. Professor Leaska brings the reader into the life of this famous fiminist like no other previous attempt, including Mr. Bell and the family log. The parents, Leslie and Julia, become real and full of the complications of parenting with such a sensitive child as Virginia. Her sister Vanessa is now shown in a much fullerl characterization than anyone has tried before. Leaska has carefully and skillfully devided these individuals from the whole picture, and 'painted' each person in a many faceted, illuminated composition and finally brings them back together in a masterful mural of reality and experience. The setting of England and the continent play a particularly stimulating part in describing the physical conditions sourrounding Virginia throughout her life. There is 'climate' throughout this book. You have contact and feeling to Virginia and not just information. She was not allowed to go to college to learn the mechanisms for her passion of writing but wrote at home and learned her own way. "A Room of Ones Own" is one of the leading declarations for women and their individual rights. Leaska presents her defiance in full force. Vita Sackville-West was one of Virginia's best friends and part of the gathering of people around this charismatic leader and activist. Vita is another study by Leaska of creative independance and enormous vitality that joined, at times with Virginia, to revel in their delight in knowing each other. The chapters of their friendship are often moving and reaffirm the value of what true friendship means. The book is a masterpiece. The style is new and directed. The characters in this drama/tragedy you will never forget. Virginia now becomes a sensual being away from her writing and then leading into her books. The New York Times reviewer Michael Anderson should be ashamed for his homophobic attitudes and some kind of revenge against Leaska or possibly Virgina herself.

Great Background for Horned Domestic Sheep
As an owner of many domestic horned sheep, which are descended from the wild sheep described in the book, I found this book fascinating especially the attention paid to horn type, growth and comparisons between subspecies. It serves as a great foundation as I continually learn to understand and improve my flock.

A "must have" book for all sheep enthusiast!!
Although published in 1964,this is perhaps the most complete work on wild sheep avaliable to the layman.Written in an easy read style, this work is full of stories of old hunts and the trials of old hunters.I find myself coming back to it time after time......

Healing Yourself With Self-Hypnosis
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall Press (March, 1998)
Authors: Caroline Miller, Steven Mitchell Sack, Joseph R. Berger, and Frank Samuel Caprio
Average review score:

Very easy to read yet very effective
This book was an easier read than many hypnosis books on the market. There are also many relaxation scripts to help get beginners started. I have been exposed to many types of hypnosis practices and I must say that I like self-hypnosis the best, but I do feel that some exposure to a professional can be very beneficial. I have been using this book as an aid for about 4 months and I must say the changes are indescribable. I have lost weight (a lot!), become more disciplined in my studies and have a more rewarding relationship with my boyfriend of 4 years. Also, since the suggestions are my own that I am giving, then I am not as prone to accept suggestions from others and as result, I am more aware of negative energy amongst other people and don't take it on. This is a great book and in conjuction with other tools such as relaxation, some exposure to personal therapy, it can/will have amazing effects and the that is the truth!

Healing yourself with self-hypnosis
If you care about yourself and well being, this book is for you! The book is easy to read and enjoyable. You can apply self-hypnosis to almost anything in your daily life. There's no magic in hypnosis, it's all about the positive attitude and response. The book in general has very good tips on how to relax and have a better way to live.

High King's Daughter
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (September, 2001)
Authors: Debra Doyle, Judith Mitchell, and James D. MacDonald
Average review score:

A good starting point for young fantasy readers
The Circle of Magic: The High King's Daughter was a book which I read when I was younger. It introduced me to the world of magic, knights, elves, princess and wizards. I enjoy reading this book even though I bought it alone and thus lost some important part of the plot. I would recommend anyone who wish to read this series to read the first book and continue to through the rest of the series before reading the last book:The High King's Daughter. The Circle of Magic series follows the traditional path, we have good and bad wizards, knights, minsterals and a princess. However, it is well written and easy to read. The characters are memorable and for most part a good introduction to the world of fantasy. However, it might not deal well with fantasy readers of older age as its effect is lessen and it is frankly, not in the league of Harry Potter. In short, this series is good for young children who is hoping to try fantasy and I am sure they will find it a good read.

A Fitting Finale
This is the sixth and final book to the Circle of Magic set, and a wonderful journey it is! We meet our 3 heros again, Randal, the wizard-in-training, his cousin Walter, a knight, and his friend, a thief turned minstral, who is a girl around his own age, named Lys. They meet friends and foes they encountered in the previous books and a new cast as well, with a plot that stands on its own. They must defeat a powerful and evil wizard and bring the rightful queen to her throne. The major strength of the story is Randal, because he is flawed, filled with doubts and fears, but determined to do the right thing anyway. His growth of both power and conviction become more evident as time goes by yet we never lose the idea that he is simply human and can always make mistakes. This character, set against a story of action and adventure, makes it all a lot of fun besides!
